No matter what the weather brings, this is the kind of place where you want to be outside playing as much as possible! Grab your coat and gloves and experience our local culture of high-altitude winter outdoor fun. Countless adventures await!
Once our three lakes—Lake Granby, Shadow Mountain Reservoir, and Grand Lake—freeze over, a whole new world of fun opens up. With this much sparkling ice, there are almost as many places to ice fish as there are trout to catch. All these lakes eventually freeze so solid that you can get to your favorite spot via snowmobile. It’s another great excuse for anglers and adventurers to spend the day outdoors enjoying the scenery and the thrill of the catch.
Grand Lake and Granby are both ideal home-bases for the perfect Colorado ski trip. We’re close enough for an easy commute to epic ski adventures, but also just far enough away to avoid the apres ski crowds.
Granby Ranch is just south of the town of Granby and offers a smaller, family-friendly downhill ski experience. Opening day is set for December 11.
Winter Park Ski Resort, one of Colorado’s premier ski resorts, is just a short drive from Granby and is currently slated to open sometime after November 30.
Cross Country Skiing
Known as the Nordic Ski Capital of Colorado, there are several different Nordic ski areas to choose from. Try a different one every day for different views and vistas!
In Granby, check out the groomed trails of the Grand Nordic at Granby Ranch. Miles and miles of maintained trails await you in the backcountry of SolVista Basin.
The Nordic Center at Snow Mountain Ranch has daily rentals, a full retail shop, and a cafeteria.
In Grand Lake, head to the Grand Lake Nordic Center for miles of groomed trails with terrain suitable for beginners as well as advanced skiers. Rentals are available at the center.
You can blaze your own trail on skis, too. Rentals are available at Never Summer Mountain Products in Grand Lake.
The fun is all downhill at the tubing hill located adjacent to the Grand Lake Nordic Center. Some tubes are available or bring your own and have a blast. Best of all — it’s free!
This time-honored sport is so versatile, it can be enjoyed practically everywhere! Snowshoe on the trails at the Grand Lake Nordic Center, Granby Ranch, Snow Mountain Ranch, or Devil’s Thumb Ranch. Or wear them while hiking our miles and miles (and did I say miles?) of trails, including Adams Falls (East Inlet) and East Shore Trail, along Shadow Mountain Lake. Wherever there is snow, there are snowshoe possibilities. Rentals are available at Never Summer Mountain Products in Grand Lake.
An area doesn’t earn the nickname of ‘The Snowmobile Capital of Colorado’ for nothing. In winter this is our favorite mode of transportation — both on our incredibly scenic and vast trail system (300 miles!) and right into downtown. The Town of Grand Lake maintains snow-packed roads, making it easy (and super fun!) to get anywhere on a snowmobile. Rentals and tours are available at On The Trail Rentals, Grand Adventures, and Spirit Lake Lodge & Snowmobile Rentals.
Due to the East Troublesome Fire in the Arapaho National Forest, some snowmobile trails may be delayed in opening this year. Call ahead at 970-887-4100 to get the latest information on trail conditions.
Whether you’re twirling like an Olympian or hockey-type skating is more your speed, come enjoy free outdoor ice skating at the rink at the Town Park in Grand Lake.
Please check back for the opening date of the ice skating rink.
Be sure to hike Grand Lake’s signature trail, Adams Falls, located at the far end of town. This family-friendly hike features the falls themselves but also spacious meadows and creeks just beyond. Keep alert, perhaps a wildlife sighting is in the cards, too!
Just a short drive away you can soak in the soothing, healing hot mineral waters at Hot Sulphur Springs Resort & Spa. Recreate here and rejuvenate there! Reservations required.
